When enjoying BBQs and picnics with your dog, it's important to keep their safety in mind. Here are some tips for BBQ and picnic safety for dogs:

Keep food out of reach: Some human foods can be toxic to dogs, including certain fruits (like grapes and raisins), chocolate, onions, garlic, and foods containing xylitol (a sugar substitute). Keep all food out of your dog's reach to prevent them from accidentally ingesting something harmful.

Avoid sharing certain foods: While it can be tempting to share food with your dog, some common BBQ and picnic items can be unhealthy for them. Avoid giving them foods high in fat, spices, or sauces, as they can cause digestive upset or even pancreatitis. Stick to dog-friendly treats or prepare special dog-friendly dishes in advance.

Beware of bones: Cooked bones, especially from BBQ meats, can splinter and pose a choking hazard or cause internal injuries. Keep all bones away from your dog's reach and properly dispose of them in a secure trash container.

Watch for food scraps: Dogs are known to scavenge and may try to snatch food scraps from plates or picnic areas. Make sure to clean up any food scraps promptly to avoid your dog consuming something that could be harmful or cause choking.

Provide fresh water: Keep a supply of fresh water available for your dog to drink throughout the BBQ or picnic. This will help keep them hydrated and discourage them from seeking out other sources of water that may not be safe for them.

Provide shade and rest breaks: Hot weather can be challenging for dogs, so ensure there is shade available for them to take breaks from the sun. Provide a comfortable spot for them to rest and cool off when needed.

Be mindful of heat: Dogs can easily overheat, especially in hot summer weather. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight for extended periods and never leave them in a parked car. Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, rapid breathing, weakness, and collapse. Seek veterinary assistance immediately if you suspect heatstroke.

Bring their essentials: If you're going on a picnic or to a BBQ location, bring your dog's essentials, such as a leash, poop bags, a water bowl, and any necessary medications or comfort items. This will help ensure their comfort and safety throughout the outing.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your dog stays safe and enjoys a pleasant time during BBQs and picnics. Always prioritize their well-being and be mindful of their specific needs and sensitivities.
